Persons With Disabilities

Episode 06: We Can Fly!

People with disabilities have the same zeal and appreciation for life as the rest of us do. They can, and want to, participate in all aspects of life along with the mainstream. But people with disabilities get shunned, doubted, mocked and insulted. Access to public places and buildings is restricted and often impossible. Doors are closed for schooling and employment. India does not appear to be mature enough and understanding enough to recognise people with disabilities for what they are – people.

To Dear Mr. Amir Khan I am Dr. Anand reside in California USA. My daughter was watching your 10th June episode of Satyamev Jayate. This episode was based on the disabled people. She told me that you showed a girl named Nisha, who is suffering from a very devastating but rare disease called “Lamellar ichthyosis”. My daughter became very sad and ran to me and told me about the girl and requested me to help her. Let me introduce myself. I am Chairman of Global Institute of Stem Cell Therapy and Research (GIOSTAR), USA. Last more than one decade, we are working on the stem cell science and developed several therapies using Stem Cells. It has been well documented that stem cells can treat several genetic and immunological diseases. Lamellar ichthyosis is a genetic disease and genetic defect triggers an inflammatory reaction with several other cell cycle reactions which ultimately results into the skin problem. It is well documented that stem cells stop those inflammatory reactions and due to that skin may return to its normal character. We have opened our world first stem cell treatment center in India at Ahmadabad, Gujarat to help Indian patients to provide world best treatment at very low coast, which is available very few places in USA. Through this email, I request you to convey my message to Nisha’s parents that I offer stem cell therapy to treat Nisha at our Ahmadabad center. In general, these types of treatment cost around $150,000 (Rs. 7500000) at USA. I would try to provide this therapy to Nisha free or at very minimal cost. Since, I do not know her address or phone number therefore, please provide her address or phone number/ email or send her our Phone number/ Email, which you will get at the end of this message. At last, I appreciate your effort for raising the key issues of the society to help the society. Looking forward to hear from you. Sincerely, Dr. Anand

Amirji, Namaste. Mai aapaki bahut badi bahot salose fan hoo. Satyamev jayate ka her episode dekhati hoo. Meri beti "Manasi" hearing impaired hai. Use bilkool sunai nahi deta. Mai Maharashtra ke solapur me rahti hoo. Meri beti jab 7 mahine ki thi tab meri samaj me aaya ki use sunai nahi deta; tab use accept karna bahoot kathin tha. Matlab mai suiside use lekar karnewali thi. kyonki sunane ko nahi aata to bolne ko bhi nahi aata ek ki vajahse doosri disability ban jati hai bahot kathin kyonki use aapani bhavana nahi batane aati aur doosaron ki bhavana use nahi samaj aati to uske jeene me kya fayada; Ye sochakar mai bahot naraj hooi thi, lekin maine ye challenge swikar karke maine apani ladhaye ladhane shuru kiya. Mai bambai gayi teen saal kiraye kar ghar lekar mai aur beti udhar rahne lagi Edhar solapur me husband aur mera 5 saal ka beta rahne lage. Maine beti ko special school me deta mai bhi uske sath rahti thi dinbhar school me. Sab sikhati thi maine usi school me D.ed kiya meri beti 'Manasi' ko leap reading pe hum kya bolte hai ye pahachane ko sikhaya aur alag alag vibration gale ke niche, gaal naak par dikhakar use bolne ke liye sikhaya ye sab 4-5 saal chalta raha. Mai deen raat use sikhati thi. 4 saal me use bolne ko aur leap reading karne sikhaya. Mai pagal ho gai thi use sikhane me. 4 saal mai soi nahi. Itani iddh lekar maine sikhaya aur use normal school me dala. lekin use sab subject puri marathi, hindi, english, sanskrit language bhi maine sikhai ia saal maine usko din me 8 hours sikhane baithti thi. Pura mera jeevan useke liye samarpit kiya maine. Meri beti ko 10th me 81% marks mile. Ab wo diploma engineering ke last year me padhati hai. Aage jakar wo engineer bananewali hai. Mai uske sath aur bachonko bhi padhati hoo. Bahot anand hota hai Aap Manasi ko lekar I am proud of her Aur mai her ek disability bachche ke parent ko batati hoo, ki kabhi aisa mat sochana ki bhagawan ne hame aisa bachcha kyo diya. Ulta mai kahti hoo ki mai meri beti ko sikhane, use kabil banane me aksham hoo aisa bhagawan wishwas laga hoga isliye bhagawan ne mujhe aisa bachcha diya, Aur normal bachche ko to kaun bhi kabil banata hai, lekin aise bachcho ka kabil banana hi to bada 'divya' hai. Aur wo maine kiya isliye mujhe mera aur meri beti ka abhiman (proud) hai. Meri beti bahot achchi tarah communicate karati hai. Usne bahot naam kamaya aap wo puri normal ki tarah jeeti hai use bahot normal friends hai. Mere ladhai ka sangharsh ka bahot achcha fal mila. Thanks Aamirji Aapne mujhe kahne ka mauka diya Aap bahot hi nek kam iss satyamev jayate ke jariye se kar rahe ho. Aap ko bahot sari shubhkamana. Meri beti ko aapko ek baar milne ki bahot ichcha hai. THANKS A LOT - Urmila

Dear Aamir, Salute to your efforts and depth of research for all the issues brought up to the world. I have polio with both the legs since age of 4. You are absolutely right that my parents and family accepted me, invested into me and lucky to have studied in great schools like "Sadhna" and "R.C.Patel" - schools in Ahmedabad in late 70s and 80s - along with normal students, which gave me tremendous confidence to compete with normal people, everyday! I did not accept perceived limitations, I believe that this attitude is key to my journey so far. Sharing my story, I did Electronics Engineering, MBA then grew up the corporate ladder in India (Arvind Mills) as well now in the US, serving currently as a General Manager in world's 6th largest IT services company. Key to all this is self confidence and remaining competitive. I am blessed with 2 handicapped children (they are 17 yeas now) and approach is same - if I can take care of 2 such children, God may help me to help hundreds of such children and their parents in future and learn from the given personal situations to lead such efforts at a larger scale. Such efforts of yours are tremendous contribution and much needed to change the mindset of 50% of the Indian population - accept the disable community as a mainstream population. 3% grant shd be used for disabled people per 1997 supreme court guideline - if that is implemented and compliance is monitored, a lot can change in next 5-10 years. Even 10% of productivity increase for estimated 6-10% of the population, can result into GDP growth by 0.6-1%, higher tax collection and reduced welfare expenses, apart from key objective of changing the social fabric of India in this 21st century. Congratulations for doing such thought provoking shows!!!

Hello Sir, I will not reveal my identity here as it has been written here. But I wanted to discuss a real life problem which my brother is facing from 6 to 7 years. Satyamev jayate’s episode of 10th june 2012 discusses about the problems and stereotype attitude which physically handicapped persons are facing today. My brother has been in the same situation from many years. Infact If I had known that SJM is airing this problem then I would have surely contacted the SJM people for airing the difficulties about my brother. My brother is suffering from the incurable disease named “Muscular dystrophy”. The origin and the cure of this disease are still unknown. Doctors always have the same response that research is going on and soon there will be a cure but cure in medical research is never so soon. It takes decades and sometimes centuries too. At the age of 28 now, he has his whole life in front of him to make. The inception of this disease was known to us at around when he was 22. Since then he is not able to climb the stairs, not able to run, not able to support himself if he falls and not able to stand from the ground if he sits. This problem is slowly and slowly rising with every year. Because of this problem, all the academic doors of the private institutes are closed for him. Lack of infrastructure for persons with disabilities and stereotype attitude of avoiding such persons in jobs is such a huge problem in this country that those persons who are fighting with such huge problems when they wake up in the morning till they go to bed at night, they are constantly reminded by the society that they are worthless. Even if they try to forget their problem for some time, infrastructural obstacles at every public place makes them realize that they are not normal. My brother was rejected from a private MBA institute just because of his problem which depressed him a lot and made him think whether he should study for anything or not because he knew that he will not be taken for job by companies. The only option was government job. He prepared for bank PO exams and in the PH quota, he secured the job in a government bank in clerk cadre. But the attitude of bank was pathetic. In the medical test when the bank came to know about the disease of my brother, they cancelled his appointment citing medical reasons. Already my brother was going through the PH quota and the bank knew about the problem at the time of interview then also later they rejected him. It was very depressing for my family because after working hard for 2 years, my brother cleared this exam and we had a ray of hope that my brother will get a job. When my father wanted to know the reason why they had selected him, nobody in the bank was responding. After this incident, my father filed a case with a help of NGO against that bank. Immediately the bank responded and they called my father to withdraw the case and said they are taking back the cancellation of the appointment and were ready to give the job. But the bank then considered my brother as a liability. They try to gave him a location in the remotest location where surviving for a normal person is also difficult let alone handicapped persons. Finally as the bank wanted, my brother didn’t take the job. Later by god’s grace, he cleared the bank PO exam and got the job of PO in another government bank. The training was at Bangalore and the training was at 4th floor of the building. The bank knew that my brother was selected in PH quota and also knew about the problem but then also the bank called him in Bangalore for training. Now the most important thing, that building where the training was going on 4th floor even did not had the elevator. For 15 days, 3 to 4 collegues of my brother used to come and carried him to 4th floor every day. Forget about the disabled friendly environment, even elevators are not there in the building and even after persistently requesting the authorities about the problems and change of the training venue just for my brother, they were not ready to listen. My brother is presently doing job in this bank only but the branch where he is now constantly reminds him of his disease. 3 to 4 stairs are there at the entrance. Everyday 2 persons carry him to climb the stairs. Even we have given a written application to the manager to put a hand rod near the stairs but he is not listening. With the help of rod, my brother will be self sufficient in climbing. Apart from this, once inside the bank, he cannot go out of the branch till the completion of his work because nobody helps him in going out and again helping him to climb back. Also the shocking thing is that he is not able to go to washroom because the washroom itself is made on height where my brother cannot climb. Such is the situation in our government offices that my brother already handicapped is not allowed to use washroom for around 10 hours. Doctors has told that my brother should regularly do physiotherapy which will definitely help him in improving his disease but the branch manager of his bank already upset over the fact that a handicapped person is under his jurisdiction do not allow my brother to go before 8 pm. Even that branch tried to initially advised us to go to another branch simply in that other branch, the work was very less. When my brother tried to tell him that physiotherapy is necessary for him, the response was even more shocking “it is not my problem, adjust and deal with it”. As soon as I saw today’s episode of SMJ I thought of sharing this. If any help, guidance or assistance can be provided regarding this problem then surely it would be of great help from this philanthropic initiative. Very less people and organizations care about the problems and feelings which handicapped people go through but when such shows take such topics, it provide a ray of hope for all those people. Thank you.

I saw today's episode. It was heart touching. Again a great effort done by Aamir ji, I totally appreciate the energy level showed by him and yes the worthy dedication by Satyamev Jayate. All I want to mention over here is that I am a student of Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Longowal, Sangrur, Punjab. It is a deemed University set up by Central Govt. of India and in SLIET, Longowal there are Certificate and Diploma programs taught by the institute and they are absolutely FREE for the persons with disabilities. Which means a person with disability who has passed his or her 10th may take admission in SLIET and pursue the certificate program for free and also person with disability who has passed his or her 10 2 may take admission in Diploma programme for which they will not be charged anything, and the most important fact which I want to mention over here is about "infrastructure", yes the infrastructure or "buniyadi jarurate" is totally in the favour of the PWD(person with disability). SLIET has got a special hostel as well as the ramps in all the blocks for the PWD. Rest of the information can be gathered from the website: www.sliet.ac.in/ www.sliet.net.in

I am Rohit from Punjab. I am deaf since 2 and half years old. My deafness level is so high that my ears remain silent all the time. Due to my parents’ efforts, I was able to goto hearing school. It was a lot of challenge in the beginning to deal with hearing environment. Sometimes, I was bullied by other kids. I could not take it anymore and due to my mom’s efforts, I started to study very hard when I was in 3rd grade and since then I have been topper in my class throughout my student life. I also went to hearing college and got 3rd rank in University. After one year of completing my graduation, I got job as Probationary Officer in Allahabad Bank and It has been almost two years since I got the job. These days, I feel as if I am not deaf anymore and I have the potential to do anything. One of my 2 older sisters is also deaf. Like me, she is also very successful in her career. She works as Senior Assistant in Punjab Mandi Board. She is married to a hearing guy and is blessed with beautiful hearing baby girl. In the end, I want to say that being disabled is not an obstacle, you need to face it bravely. Our lives are like lock and keys. With right keys, lock can be opened. So, there is always a solution to every problem. Education and Knowledge play key roles in helping disabled people to make them more confident and live with dignity.

U had only try to highlight those doctors who r doing bad practicing. Good doctors r always good and remain good. So I think they should not have any problem.   Thanks. Our blessings r always with u.   Prashant
