A parliament of, for and by children Back
A small school in the town of Rajgarh, Rajasthan, has 65 students who are eager to learn. But due to the inconsistent attendance of teachers, learning was often disrupted and school facilities were poor. Students were often left stranded with no teachers and even basic activities could not be done. However, the students decided to take charge of their own learning. They formed a Student Parliament or ‘Bal Sansad’ which helped organizing and participation of children in various activities. They even formed ministries with Food, Weather, Education and Environment Ministers taking charge of their departments.
This enabled participation of students in school administrative work. Students created learning environment for themselves, and found ways to learn and teach as a collective.
This story was shared by Design For Change (DFC), a global movement designed to give children an opportunity to express and action their ideas for a better world. Since 2009 over 1,70,000 children have participated in the DFC India School Challenge and have submitted over 3000+ compelling stories, 100 of which were recognized at the 'I CAN' awards in Ahmedabad on November 22, 2014.
