A St Hilda's College student was raped outside the hostel in Mumbai last evening. It was around 9 p.m. when she returned after a dinner with her friends, 2 boys and 1 girl. She was raped by 2 men inside an abandoned garage outside her hostel. She was dragged inside the garage and a handkerchief was used to gag her. The men started fondling her after which they took turns to rape her. The girl is currently recovering in a special ward on the 10th floor of Pranik Hospital.
This morning, hundreds of college students protested outside the gates of the hostel and policemen around the city are in full alert, almost as if a terror alert has just come in. One of the accused has been caught while the sketches of the other have been circulated. The police should hopefully catch him in the next 24 hours The accused who has been arrested lives in the Varadhi slums of Mumbai, and like many other slumdwellers, is a history sheeter. He recently passed out of a school near his house, one that evidently taught him nothing;
While women can avoid going out at night, it is true that rapes still occur. However, the common consensus still stands that a change in the 'mindset' of the public will prevent such incidents and help past victims as well.
