Good, Bad, Ugly (Part 2)
A good leader is never forgotten. His deeds live on down the decades as we discovered when we travelled to Purnea, Bihar. Ajit Sarkar, a politician from Purnea, won four elections in a row from this area and was murdered by a rival politician. Even today he is loved and revered by the poor in his constituency. In this section, His son Amit Sarkar talks about the ideals and principles that his father lived by. One would think that voters would reject a candidate who faces criminal charges. Research shows otherwise says Dr. Milan Vaishnav, Associate, South Asia programme at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace who joined the show from Washington D.C. Dr. Vaishnav says the more serious the charges, the higher a candidate’s chances of a sweeping victory. Such a candidate, according to senior journalist Utkarsh Kumar Sinha, is regarded by voters as someone who is more likely to deliver although the reality is very different.
