Helping the Helpless
When a three-and-a-half-year old girl went missing from her house in Bhopal the people in the locality got together to try and find her. Seema Verma was one of them.
When the child was found, she had been sexually assaulted and in a bad condition. Over the next few days, her condition worsened. That’s when Seema decided to do more for this child. "It troubled me to watch her like this. She was so afraid, I thought to myself, will we not find any help? I started crying - that's when my daughter gave me Childline's helpline number."
Childline’s helpline number - 1098 was featured on the Satyamev Jayate’s episode on Child Sexual Abuse. Seema called and asked Childline for help in this case. The NGO helped the child recover, counselled her and her family and also filed a case against the rapist.
Seema says a lot of people ask her, why she did so much for a child who wasn’t even related to her. Seema has an answer for all them. "I tell them she is the nation's daughter and I am one of the nation's mothers. Doesn’t every child deserve love, care and safe spaces to grow up in? What will happen to the country, if this keeps happening to our children?"
