There are two aspects of foot operated taps. 1st is water conservation and the other one is hygiene. Let’s focus on water conservation first. The most essential among all the natural resources on earth is water. The water situation is very critical in India and every drop counts. A step to conserve water is the step to secure the future. Water conservation needs to be a way of life, not just something we think about once in a while. It means using our water wisely and caring for it properly since each of us depends on water for life and it is our responsibility to conserve water. The sink is where the maximum savable, potable water is wasted. All because we can not operate the tap constantly while we shave, wash or brush teeth, since our hands are otherwise occupied or just that we forget to turn the tap off. Children are the biggest wasters of water because they are unaware of the gravity of the situation. Adding to this is the fact that they live in a grown-up friendly world. Observe your child washing their hands or brushing their teeth. Even if they are made aware of the importance of water conservation, there is no way on earth they can operate the sink tap intermittently. Normally a lot of water is wasted because we can not operate the tap constantly as our hands are busy and we let the water flow. Now we have solution………. “Foot Operated Tap” It moves these controls from busy hands to idle feet. All you need to do now is press the foot pedal to open the tap and release it to close it. You now have the power to open the tap in short bursts, only when you actually need it, without actually touching the tap allowing users to turn the water on and off even when hands are full or messy. It prevents water from running continuously and it rules out the chance of taps been left open by mistake. Studies conducted indicate that in a four member household, use of the foot operated tap alone can save up to 25000 liters of water annually. It also conserves the energy which is utilized to pump the water to overhead tanks. Why touch a dirty handle when you have just washed your hands? Several diseases are transmitted due to poor personal hygiene. Hotels, hospitals, schools, public places or our homes where taps are touched by many hands, but rarely cleaned are major threat areas. Children are most vulnerable to this. The major diseases caused by this contamination are flu, h1n1 and other viral fevers. Most of our sicknesses can be prevented by right hygiene. Faucet handles have been identified as the cross-contamination area for bacteria like E. coli and salmonella. The American Society of Microbiology's finding is that "9,000 deaths and 81 million illnesses from food borne bacteria have occurred since 1992 owing to improper hand washing." It can be avoided by the use of foot pedal valve or foot taps. The foot tap restricts this huge water wastage and protect people from the contamination. FAQ What is the amount of water that I can save? Since the design of a foot tap shuts the water as soon as the foot is moved there is absolutely no chance of any accidental or willful or careless wastage of water. Studies show a saving of 30% - 60% is achievable automatically. But children save more water because with regular sinks, they cannot reach the tap and waste a lot of water. Will it reduce the risk of transmitting germs to other? No matter how well one washes their hands, when they touch the tap knob they are re-contaminating their hands. This is then passed on to others via hand shakes or keyboards etc. With the foot tap they exit the restroom with their hands uncontaminated. What are the diseases transmitted by contact? Deadly diseases like swine flu (h1n1), influenza, Hepatitis A, Pneumonia, Jaundice, diarrhea etc are transmitted by dirty hands and simple, casual contact. Will foot tap really reduce paper towel cost? Study's have shown that 86% of the people using a public restroom use a paper towel to shut sink taps because they do not want to touch anything contaminated. How can foot tap save power too? The lesser the water you use, the lesser you pump to overhead storage tanks so less the power consumed. How much power does foot tap consume? Foot taps are totally mechanical and consume no power. Can a Foot tap be fixed to all taps? Look under your sink. If you see a master valve and a pipe (metal or plastic) leading to the sink tap, then you can install a foot tap.

Sir, Seen the later of the episode on the water. Was touched by the efforts put in by the Uncle from Mumbai for his society, villagers from all over places and an IAS officer from Tamil Nadu - My salute to all of them. My main aim to tell you the story for the crises and value of the water. I was in Indian Air Force and served the country for 23 years. Now, recently I left (30 Nov 11) the IAF due my personal problems. When I go back in the year 2006, I was posted to Air Force Utarlai, Barmer, Rajasthan. In the month of Aug, there was raining all over in the Rajasthan. On 19th Aug 2006, there was heavy rain in that region and on that night at around 0015, call bell of my house was belled by someone, when I went to open up the door, what I see that there was water all over the place (I was staying in Ground Floor). It was the matter of concern. In the morning, some part of our domestic (residential area) and some part of our Technical Area got affected by the flood. Somehow we could manage some sort of rescue operations (there is also a long story in between, which will be a boring thing for you). During that period we were expecting our first child (that news we got after a gap of four years of marriage). Railway link from Balotra to Barmer got effected very badly. So, trains stopped operating after Balotra. Road got affected and situation became worse to worsen when we got the news that pipeline, which connects to AF Station got damaged. One can imagine, what will be situation. Since, it was with everybody over there. Anyhow, I could manage to leave my wife to my native place after a week of this. When I came back alone I saw the crisis of water, there was no water supply in the water connection for almost 3/4 months (which I dont remember exactly). We used the water (for other than drinking and cooking purpose), which was stagnated at major portion of our technical area. And we use to get water tanker from neighboring Army unit and we used some times only 20 Ltrs of water in a day. For me there was no problem, since I was alone but people those were having family they have struggled a lot during that period. So, nobody can understand that what is water crises, specially those who are not use to it, since my childhood, I never faced water crises, prior to this incident. Though, I am always in the favour to not to waste the water but this period was very crucial. I live in Delhi and now also we face quite a lot of problem with regard to Non supply of water in some part of the city and specially in our locality. But, the problem here is in Delhi Nobody is like the lady IAS Officer, who changed the scienrio at Chennai. I dont say that you cannot do it in Delhi but atleast someone in Delhi can start this. In Delhi the department of Delhi Jal Board is so shameless even they don't bother to give any reply or solve the problem. Anyway sir, this was my story with regard to having seen, what is water crisis ? I hope nobody face this problem, which we faced. But it was the great support of our friends (soldiers / seniors ) and our families who kept our morale in the hour of crises. My salute to all of them, who were posted at that place during that period. I too want to do something for this issue but due to paucity of time in earning the livelihood, am not able to spare time for this issue. Please do suggest / guide me how can I contribute in this regard ? Thank you and Regards R V

Dear Aamir jee, I just watched the show "Every drop counts", and the show was indeed an eye opening one. I am a professor of water at the University of Kathmandu and running a research centre called Aquatic Ecology Centre. My research area is on water quality in the Hindu-Kush Himalayan Region with special focus on formulating methods in water quality assessment. Please visit assess-hkh.at for further details. I coordinated a project recently (2005-2008) in Northern Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. My partner in India is University of Roorkee and I have worked with Dr. Trivedi at Central Pollution control Board. All the problems of water in India from water scarcity causing conflicts, groundwater contamination by industries, bio-magnification effects of pesticides and the problems of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and Arsenic are common also in Nepal. A large proportion of people in Nepal India border- the gangetic plains, are suffering from increasing Arsenic in groundwaters that causes cancer.. Both Indian and Nepalese scientists need to be involved seriously on proper identification of the problems through scientific research, which is unfortunately not the case. I strongly recommend that you in your next show focus on Arsenic- a slow poison in the groundwaters of India.  Dr. Subodh, Professor, Nepal

Issue of flooded roads while our underground aquifers have been depleting rapidly, has been been bugging me as a Scientist-Inventor-Entrepreneur for many years. When I looked at it deeper a few years ago, all our urban roads are designed as Drains (Plinth level of houses is stipulated to higher). This water collects and flows in whichever direction the road slopes (which follows the terrain level). Collects at the lowest point wherever and floods and becomes a traffic hazard / overloads the storm-water drainage system). Had come-up with an interesting thought of harvesting this water in smaller lots along the road by making gentle 100mm high inclined ramps to drain to which side berms permitted the sinking of the recharge-well. At my behest proposal for a Pilot Project was also sent the PEC University of Technology to the UT Admn for trial on one of the many road intersections which get flooded regularly and make a mess of the traffic. PEC's survey/design/supervision costs were estimated at Rs. 20 lacs. On a broad estimate, costs estimate of the total would be below Rs. 1 Crore. Work would not take more than 6 months to execute and could have been easily tested this monsoon. All that water would have gone to recharge aquifers. Replication possibility: all over the country, including national, state and even rural roads PEC has yet to receive a response Chandra

I am a student. I stay in a hostel. And I have noticed that in most of the hostels in Pune the water is supplied by tanker. And students don't care where the water is coming from. They pay for it say it is their right to waste water. Most of the students who are rich stay in hostels where 24X7 water supply is there. They are not even aware that the water scarcity is there in Maharashtra. Because of this today's program they will come to know about it. But I would like to suggest one solution for water savage in hostels where the youth of India stays. I would suggest that if we can tell them to practice some of the habits like 1) Close the tap when the usage is over. 2) If the tap is leaking they should complain it to the authority and get it fixed unless it is not leaking. (I Guarantee you that each and every room has at least one leaking tap out of 4 to 5 in most of the hostels in Pune ) 3) Don't at all waste water for stupid reasons. Most my friends used to flush BEFORE they go for toilet even if the toilet is clean. I think this should stop. I am not saying they shouldn't flush. I am saying that they should flush water when they are done. Everyone in India can do this. 4) Whatever practices I have mentioned are not going to save much of the water at individual level. But if everyone in the hostel does it, then I think we can save 100s of gallons of water everyday in every hostel. I would like to back up myself with some statistics 1) If a tap is leaking drop by drop then in a week 24 litres of water is getting wasted. 2) And if a tap is left open for a day then 30 litres water is getting wasted. 3) I have done a research that most of the hostels in Pune have this tap damage problem and for years the tap are not getting fixed they are always running 24X7X365. Imagine the water wastage. This is going to stop only if the students staying in hostels take it seriously. ONE HABIT CAN CHANGE LOT OF THINGS AND SAVE GALLONS OF WATER

Satyameba jayate, a programme which is having full potential to represent different problems nad their solution in social life. Thanks to Amir Khan for his rich representation on the subject. Regarding rain water harvesting and ground recharge, episode was designed with a great vision and it requires to be adopted as implemented in Chennai in leadership of Ms Susila. I have a great story on it, if you have time to listen to us it will be a great pleasure and satisfaction towards the above subject. Mr Golakh Bihari, M.A in Political Science passed out from Ravenshaw College Cuttack in year 1964. He has in association with many organizations to support social activities. He lives in a village Jamadhar, from his village the Jamadhar Pata (The huge paddy field consisting of 4 villages of 1500 hectors Rekabibazar, kujahala, lunupur, paidhia, and others). Village was headed with a Sarpanch, sarpanch having some bahubali local mafia, who invests money in his election and in return they take all the contract related jobs from any fund like nrgs, MLA, MP, and any other related fund and works 30 to 40% of allotted fund by providing shares at different level of stakeholders. Mr Golakh is keeping on raising the voice against the above practices but he has been attacked and harassed by the group. Farmers are innocent they don’t want to involve into the above cases as they are ignorant about this methodology. This practices leads to underdevelopment of work in any area starting from construction of school to road to bridge. Mr Golakh, has a great vision and he surveyed the jamadhar patra area, the origination of the water source and channel and connected to other rivers it, he discovered the Jokdia project on Kharsuan River was constructed during British period channels are earmarked. He has constantly worked without notifying anybody in the village as he knows if somebody knows about this, they will disrupt the work processes. He could find out the exact location where bridge/barrage can be made and by motivating farmers cum fishermen could able construct a mud bridge which will store the water for recharging purpose. It has taken around 10 years to complete all the related base work, finally he has designed a blue print and projected a investment of Rs 5 lacs to complete the Sustainable dam, which will preserve the flow of water by putting barriers and accordingly water will be get accumulated in the existence channel and recharge the ground so that crops can get extra energy on the growth. He has approached Govt of Odisha, and Govt had sanctioned Amount Rs1 lac from Agricultural Production Commission (APC) head, but unfortunately sanctioned amount has landed to PODRDO the block level administration and with the above practices it has allotted to sarpanch then their bahubali and work has started without notifying Mr Patra. Mr Patra has came to know about the matter and also realized the 30%- 40% rule will be applied in the project and the dream project will be vanished with the involvement of above mafias. He raised his voice at different level, he has manhandled, his family were abused by those people, finally he got a ordered from Govt of Odisha, that this fund is contributed by outside agency and requester has to complete the work, Work has stopped and handed over to Mr Patra, by the time most of the fund exhausted, bahubali’s started engaging those fishermen and farmer who has contributed their effort for construction of the mud bridge and demanded their wages and there was no way left without paying them, project has failed to complete the work due to insufficient fund, and also criticized in all level that patra has eaten all the money allocated by Govt. He never slept, continued to designing the project attracting all the attention towards irrigation, minor irrigation, ministry of water resources dept Odisha etc. In the year 1999, again next elected nominee member(as like as sarpanch) has intervened and tried some fund and wanted to carryout the work with the above percentage work, Mr Patra strongly opposed and had faced consequences from all the village people. Finally, Govt of Odisha, Secretary Water recourses instructed Collector Jajpur not to allot any fund towards “CHIDANANDA MIP” as it’s a project is having high vision and ordered Minor Irrigation dept to float tender with the input of Mr Patra. Mr Bipra Charan Patra owner of Nilachal Construction special class contractor is a devotee of Swami Chidananda and moved forwarded to help Mr Patra by designing of the material list and submitted the quotation. Finally Nilachal construction owned the tendering process and authorized Mr Golakh to carry out work of Chidananda MIP within the approved amount Rs5.50(approx). Mr Patra devoted his whole time to construct the barrage, approach road for or easy transportation of Agricultural Products to local Market and passage of 5000 to 10,000 devotes to sri Lokanath Mahadev , facilatting school children of Lunupur village who are coming to Jamadhar High school through this paddy field and death related to snake bite also observed. He was standing in the paddy field with workers arranging their tiffen without worry of sunstroke etc. he has been fainted many times near the construction due to high heat. All the associated engineer has supported this noble work and contributed their effort to make the project success. Bridge is completed, water stored, then same year less rainfall has observed and this stored water made entire jamadhar pata to sustain with the rainfall and paddy corps were produced. Farmers started accessing the Jamadhar Patta through their cycles, bullack cart, tractors and scooter, students started coming to school by cycle, and devotes started going to darshan lord siva In easy way. And also people started time passing near to water fall of bridge and the gho..gho sound of the bridge is became very attractive. And fishermen were very happy for easily fishing at the approach road. Farmers and village people started realizing the worthiness of the project, project also highly appreciated by Chief Engineer MI, All India Radio, Cuttack coverage the voice and broadcasted it. MBC TV has taken coverage about life of Mr Patra and his association with the sustainable water project for its programme TRUE STORY and has been broadcasted in Nov 2011 Mr Patra, has contributed his whole life and suffered a lot from all anti social people, his contribution must be honored by representing his story on your great episode. He is constant reader of yojoana and extracted the contributed page by Sj. Umesh Narayan Panjiar, IAS, Hon’ble Secretary to Govt. of India, Ministry of Water Resources, New Delhi.”. do quote his slogan “More Crop and income per drop of water into reality” – Involvement of water user’s Association (WUA’s) are completely failure due to ignorance. Who will take the challenges of improved management in the 21st Century? he does take the pathetic song of T.S. Elliot, the 16th Century Poet. “Water water Every where but not a drop to drink”. Now in the 21st Century we can read it as not a drop for agriculture. It is worthwhile to quote the latest warning of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan “Agriculture cannot wait and water shed cannot be ignored”. Mr Golakh and his team are a group of NGO activists, Researchers, Professors, Retd. IAS and IPS officer, Doctors, Engineer and Advocates have started the SEBA Society for Environmental and Bio-technological action at Jajpur Road in 1997 and formed Chidananda Pani Panchayat at Yamadhar, Kabirpur, Jajpur Block from 2002.

I am R.Sundaresan living in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. I have watched some episodes of your wonderful program, Satyamev Jayate. My hearty Congratulations to you, Your team, Star Plus and Star Vijay. This is a wonderful program very much needed by not only our country, but all the nations of the entire world. The many of the problems and solutions telecast are common to people of the entire world. Regarding Drug over-pricing and Generic Stores selling drugs at a very reasonable price, I read in newspaper that you had given a presentation to the committee of the MPs from our Parliament. I hope our Central Government ushers in the Generic Drug Stores throughout the country as early as possible. This will enable our people to have the medicines at minimum cost. I request your team to follow up with our Government for an early implementation of this good scheme. Water Scarcity: Today,22-7-2012, I watched the episode on water scarcity. The solutions brought out have to be implemented by our Central and State Governments at the earliest. All the people of our country must be involved in this. I am happy to inform you that in my house at Chennai, the rainwater harvesting scheme has been implemented successfully. The rainwater falling on my house's roof-top goes into the well in our house and we utilize the well water. During Rajeev Gandhi's time, there was a Ganga purification action plan and many thousands of crores of rupees were spent but nothing came out of it. the Ganges is till getting more and more polluted. So, as a first step, Government should take action to end this pollution of all our rivers at the source. The river waters should be purified to eliminate the toxic wastes present in them; The next step should be to link all the rivers in our country to avoid floods and droughts at different parts of our country. These steps must be implemented in the shortest time possible. This will benefit our entire population. the River linking project will generate lat of employment, so the inter-linking canals will provide transportation routes for movement of people and goods. I understand that the Gujarat Government has built 2 lakh check dams in the state rivers. They also have rainwater harvesting programmes in each village. They use the surface water to the maximum for their needs. All the other states must emulate this. finally, all the rivers in our country and also in the countries in the world, must NOT be allowed to drain their waters in the sea or oceans. If you think that all the river in the world drains into the sea or oceans, you are wrong. One river in Tamil Nadu, drains into a lake and does not join the Bay Of Bengal. This will result in availability of more river and rain water for the ever increasing population in our country and the world. We will have to build canals, lakes and check-dams to achieve this. Today we have the needed technology to do this. So, don't take this as a crazy idea of a mad man. so, let our engineers and technicians plan to implement this. In Brazil,South America, river Amazon flows into the Atlantic Ocean at such a speed that the pure water of the river remains as pure for several kilometers before it becomes salty. I hope you take these solutions seriously. Thanking you for your wonderful episodes which are necessary and timely program, Satyamev Jayate.

Hi, I watched the latest episode on water and that made me want to share this very little small story. I am a Mubaiker married in Pune. As a mumbaiker I never felt the no water bite until i came to Pune..where many societies faced water cuts etc.. My in-laws are people who value nature and its resources so they had their rules of conservation in place when it came to lifestyle. So one day we had a new maid servant. She was washing utensils with full tap opened and with maximum flow. Even repeated warnings of my mother -in -law to use the tap at slow flow did not affect her. So my in-laws fixed all the pipes in our house such that the maximum flow is very low. The maid daily struggled with the taps and were dumbfounded, she could not get the water at full thrust, got her friends to see but...so she complained to my mother in law that "building mein sabke yaha paani puri force mein aata hain apke yaha kuch problem hain plumber ko bulav" ..then my mother in law said that "Jab paani ki kami hogi to tum logo ko aur zyaada taklif padegi hum to paani kharid bhi lege..tum kya karonge"...she did understand...but later on after few days she figured out what was the problem and fixed all the taps as per her need. ..so that she can do her washings with all the water she needed... And eventually my inlaws had to give her a big lecture..although that fell on deaf ears. But with time she got accustomed. There are many such innovative ideas when it comes to water management in ur house. So I would recommend like my mother in law every household should instruct their family members and the maids to be considerate when using water...and make sure its becomes a habit. I have changed after marriage too. Thanks for bringing out such changes Aamir.

So our school gets suffecient water for atleast 6 months and we don't have to buy water. Every house can build such water harvesting system I have done this for last 25 years . I would like to show the diagram if any one is interest I want to help .

i want to take you to firozabad (uttar pradesh), this place is well known for it's bangles. but the misery of the city is that today people don't have water to drink or even for daily purposes; just like what happens in desert. firozbad once in time period of 1995- 2000 was the city leading all over India with highest number of INDIVIDUAL BOREWELLS. no state agency or government agency then looked upon the issue. neither local bodies paid any attention towards it. people wherever they wanted (roads, streets, factories, moholla's, houses ) they started digging BOREWELLS. as they thought water to be in-house production, they cared very less towards recycling or harvesting it and to the fact they started to spill water 2-3 times more than their personal requirement. adding misery to it came thenby mayor (present MLA) he obviously did many works too good but made one absolutely wrong decision. may be because he could not foresee its consequences. he started digging community borewells with height upto 600 fts. these borewells had very huge motors and as a result over 4-5 years water scarcity in localities solved, but real problem started arising. underground water level started falling tremendously. now water level reached 450fts below ground level and by 2008 no personal borewell were able to work. people are now totally dependent on community borewell who often do not work because scarcity of electricity in uttarpradesh . also people living away from borewell are not able to get water because most of the water in lines are sucked by the motors implanted by other members drawing water from same lines. today water in firozabad is just like sea water, TDS
