Every morsel of food and sip of water we take is important for our health and well-being, right from the time we are newborn infants. Yet, for decades our food and water have been contaminated by powerful, harmful pesticides which have been promoted as necessary for better agricultural output. But the reality is that we don’t need pesticides for better yield, and the use of these pesticides is not only deadly for health but results in expensive farming methods. The solution is to adopt organic farming, which is possible and profitable, as the state of Sikkim has shown.

Kheti Virasat Mission, established in 2005 in Faridkot, works with the farmers of Punjab to address the detrimental effects of chemical and hybrid agriculture, and promotes sustainable, ecological farming practices as well as the conservation and regeneration of natural water resources to re-establish traditional wisdom and practices related to water. Kheti Virasat Mission works towards awareness of environmental health issues and eco-sustainable rural development, and organises activities in this direction including awareness camps and seminars, workshops, surveys and campaigns.

Centre for Sustainable Agriculture

Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA), registered in Hyderabad in 2004, establishes models of sustainable agriculture, working in partnership with NGOs and community-based organisations to help farmers conserve their resources and their rights, and engaging with the establishment for policy change.

CSA evolved from the sustainable agriculture desk of the Centre for World Solidarity (www.cwsy.org) from 1998, and believes in promoting sustainable agricultural technologies that are based on farmers’ knowledge and skills, their innovation based on local conditions and their use of natural products and processes to gain better control over the pre-production and production processes involved in agriculture.
