CHILDLINE (http://www.childlineindia.org.in), India’s first 24-hour, toll-free telephone helpline for children in distress, was launched in 1996. As of April 2011, CHILDLINE has responded to a total of 21 million calls and services nearly 3 million calls every year. CHILDLINE operates in 200 cities/districts in 30 states and union territories through its network of 415 partner organisations across India. The toll-free number, 1098, can be dialed by a child or a concerned adult. CHILDLINE responds to emergency needs of children and also links them to services for their long-term care and rehabilitation. CHILDLINE has so far reached out to over three million children across the nation through such calls.
CHILDLINE works for the protection of the rights of all children, but its special focus is on highly vulnerable children, including children who are victims of sexual abuse. CHILDLINE helps abused children through direct intervention in a crisis situation; rescuing children from abusive situations; and giving them medical help, shelter, protection from the abuse, and counselling and rehabilitation
CHILDLINE India Foundation is directly supported by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and has been recognized as the Mother NGO for setting up and running the CHILDLINE 1098 helpline across India.
